Actually, Mr Portnoy lives in Larkspur, California, about 5 minutes
without traffic north of Sausalito. He plays second clarinet in the
Bohemian Club ("a boy scout camp for the rich") symphony and plays golf
avidly. He no longer accepts students, but continues to market his
mouthpieces. When I last talked to him his ligatures sounded like they
might be going out of supply eventually and he did not mention any reed
supply, nor have I seen them advertised.
As an aside, after closely examing a picture of Eduard Brunner (list
member Armand Ferland noticed this too), I made a
copy of his ligature by removing (with a Dremel tool) the metal between
the fixation screws on a regular Bonade ligature: the result was more
vibrant. This configuration is remarkably similar to a Portnoy
ligature!
