Clark,
I've been to NY many times, mostly for the jazz, and have become
disillusioned w/ the big "touristy" places like the Blue Note [they even
sell Tshirts and belt buckles there!] and Village Vangaurd. Expensive,
standing room only, usually. While in NY last week, I discovered a small,
good food, variety of exotic beers, *superb* music club called "Zinno". I
heard John Bunch and Bucky Pizarelli there; formerly pianist and guitarist
with Benny Goodman. Excellent music! It's in the Village, on 13th St just
off 7th avenue, if I remember correctly. Also check out Bradley's [a nice
intimate piano room], and Sounds of Brazil [S.O.B.], though it can get kind
of wild there. Also Visiones, which tends towards the more modern,
young-guns, 8 zillion notes-per-minute jazz. All in the village. Near
Lincoln Center, "Iridium" is excellent -- Joe Henderson is in there this
week. Enjoy, and I wish I were going!
