Re: Stars and Stripes
The year after I graduated from Arcadia High School in California ( I
graduated in 1966), the director of our band decided to use Stars and
Stripes for their parade competition march.

S&S was generally considered to be a dangerous piece because it was
so familiar to the judges. It was a successful strategy, however, as
the band won the sweepstakes award at the Long Beach (California)
Band review competing against at least 140 bands from all over the
state. In my senior year we had only managed a tie for the top award
against one of the great bands from the San Diego area.

Strangely enough, our band director was also an ex-marine bandsman. He was a
pretty relaxed kind
of guy and I'll bet he bent the rules as much as he could get away
with when he was in the service.
