Dan,
Micheal Drapkin's book, "Symphonic Repertoire for the Bass
Clarinet" addresses this problem head on. (Roncorp publishers) If you don't
have this, GET
IT!!! No bass clarinet player (however part-time) should be without it.
His caveat is, "when in doubt, look at the score". Good advice.
