If (as happens in Wagner) the bass part zaps up into the treble clef, my
understanding is that you have to transpose it UP an octave, so that, e.g. G
in the first space above the treble clef is played as "top G". This will
*sound* as F on the treble clef top line of course ...
This is the reverse (almost) of the old situation with the cello going into
the treble clef, when the player has to play an octave lower than
written. (I don't know whether this is still the convention).
