The throat register of my R-13 (purchased c. 1974) to put it frankly
-- does something horrible. The A sounds like a sort of broken
bossun's whistle, the Ab scares the cat, and don't even get me started
on the Bb. It doesn't matter what sort of strange fingerings I try,
it just sounds awful. (I guess maybe adequately in forte passages,
but it's too late to try it out right now.)

Is there some adjustment I can make to my reed (usually a Vandoren 3.5
or a sawed-off 5) that might help? I am for some reason stuck on an
old Pomarico crystal #2 and a corroding Mitchell-Lurie lig. Or do I
just have to practice more?
