Frenando,
There are two superb sheet music stores in New York. The best is
called Frank Music and is at 250 W. 54 Street. Heidi, the owner, has no
reading room - just a counter. You ask for the pieces you want and
usually she has them. She is also VERY good at getting things (as good as
Eble, and that's saying alot). She carries a huge selection of stuff
including chamber music. Then there is Patelson's on 56th street (just
east of 7th Avenue and behind Carnegie Hall). They have a large showroom
with lots of music displayed. They carry all sorts of musical knick-knacks
and some recordings, but their selection of music is less extensive than
Frank's.
As for stores selling musical instruments and accessories, the
only really good store in Manhattan seems to be Rod Baltimore's store on
48th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. However, Fred Weiner Music is in
Queens, about 45 minutes away by subway and they have an extensive supply
of instruments, etc. You can get explicit directions by calling them at
1-800-2675. Have fun and don't forget to get the best Pizza in New York
at Ray's on 6th avenue at 11th street. (Ray-Bari at Amsterdam and 70th
is a very close second).
