Which is more important, talent or hard work? What a terrific
question Stan!! From all that I have observed in my own teaching and in the
teaching of many others, hard work that is facilitated by good teaching
prevails over raw talent in most cases. Of course, to be successful in
music you do need to be talented as well as posses a good work ethic. Yet,
the person that works hard and has been taught well will know what, as well
as how to practice. Therefore the hard worker will prevail in this
hypothetical situation more times than not.
This certainly does put a lot of responsiblity on the hypothetical
teacher though, doesn't it? The teacher of a hard worker cannot blame that
student for not learning. Of course, I don't believe that it is appropriate
to place the "Not Teachable" tag on students. I prefer to focus on my own
teaching and activities when evaluating a student who is having difficulty
succeeding.
