Years ago, Kal Oppermann, the famous reed maker, made me a wonderful reed
knife. I still have it, and still think it is terrific. There are other
terrific specialty knives out there as well. However, there is a quick and
easy solution to the knife issue, right in your hometown; no need to
special-order anything.

The solution I recommend is the following: go out and get yourself a nice
Swiss Army knife. These knives are quite sharp, and very easy to hold due
to the bulk of the knife. The shape of the cutting edge, with its slight
curvature, makes it easy to scrape *exactly* where you want to scrape. They
are available virtually anywhere--many department stores carry them. I know
of professionals--both clarinetists and double-reed players--who use these
knives with great success, and consequently are very happy with them.
