In high school, my band director approached me and asked ME to play
in the scool jazz combo. There wasn't enough interest for a true
big band, so he wrote all of the arrangements for rhythm section
clarinet, two trumpets, tenor, alto, and trombone. We played a lot
of simple "Kind of Blue" tunes and some standards.
There are band directors that will take the time to customize
their jazz program to suit the needs of their students. I
understand that if he was writing arrangements for a traditional
big band it would involve to much time to be practicle. Actually
that experience really turned me on to music and jazz and I thank
my ex-band director very much for the opportunity to participate.
