Timothy Morrill <JazzCl@-----.COM> wrote about undertones in the high register
and Fred Jacobowitz responded that there are a variety of possible reasons
and that he should work with a teacher.

In over 40 years of playing I've occasionally had problems with undertones on
staccato attacks above the staff, while there is no problem with slurred
tones in the same range. For me this has generally been a reed problem - a
bit of adjustment (or a different reed) quickly solved the problem.

Recently I've started playing Eb soprano and find the problem much more
frequently than on Bb/A. The solution seems the same, but the tendency is
greater.

I would also appreciate if Fred J. would tell us more about his thinking on
this problem. I certainly agree with his caveat that it is best to work with
a teacher, but we have a considerable range of levels and skills in this
forum. Certainly some of us can benefit from verbal advice and have the
knowledge and skills to apply it to our situation. I have done some
teaching, and it would be useful both as a performer and a teacher to hear
some discussion and thoughts on possible causes and cures.

How about it Fred?
