Just a thought--have you had the instrument looked at by a competent repair
person lately? I played a bit on a clarinet once to test it and had the same
odd sound--or maybe a different odd sound but at any rate an overtone in the
register you mention. Even the people at the store heard it. It didn't
happen on my own instrument and it sounded nasty. I did as quick a check as
I could and noticed a few pads that didn't look right to me (I'm not a repair
techincian) but I suggested to the store that they have their repair
department look it over. When I came back the next week they had had the
instrument re-padded and the sound was gone. I still didn't like it that
much, but it played better with the hardware fixed!
