(1) re choice of clarinets (again) - Craig Hill mentions corps de
rechange entirely in passing. Dan L. did not - this time around, anyway.
I have not yet got hold of Lawson's new book, but it seems to me that the
use or not of corps de rechange must affect the tonal qualities of
clarinets. Surely an A built as an A is going to sound decidedly
different from a B flat with bits in? Simply tuning the notes with the
corps is going to change the sound compared with an A - the instruments
may even need some different cross-fingerings. Does anyone out there have
experience of using corps de rechange on modern copy instruments?
(2) Bernie H. - I am going to Lancaster for the CASS conference. If you
find me out, you will hear genuine bass clarinet tone as described in the
Oxford Companion to musical instruments - "the strange furry tone of this
instrument ..."....
