Bill,

These pieces become more enjoyable once you play them with the accompanimant.
I have a student that recently performed these on a senior recital. He, too,
did not care for them until he started working with the pianist. From the
first rehearsal with the pianist, he couldn't put them down.

All five pieces are very delightful. I believe that once you can get with a
pianist, you will begin to understand why they are written the way they are.

There is a fairly good recording by Emma Johnson on the ASV label. It contains
the Finzi Concerto, Five Bagatelles, as well as works by Charles Stanford.

It was released in 1992. The number is ASV-cd-787. The Orchestra is the
Royal Philharmonic Conducted by Sir Charles Groves. The accompaniment is
performed by pianist Malcom Martineau. I sometimes have a problem with
MS. Johnson's sound, but her technique is outstanding.
