I don't know if this answers the question, but I hated the piece when I
first picked it up. Like you said, it's hard to connect the dots, and I
thought the piece was really boring. (It happens to be one of my teacher's
favorites, so she was disappointed I didn't like it). Another student played
it at a recital, though, and when I heard the piano part, something went
"ding!" in my head, and I got it... the dots were suddenly connected. Find a
recording by a performer you like, and I think you'll see that Five
Bagatelles really shows off the versatility of the clarinet. The movements
are really contrasting, and I think they're fun to play if you know what's
going on in the big picture. It's not a piece that I was able to read
through and enjoy the first time, though.
