Dear Susan,

I played piccolo in high school, I really wanted to play clarinet but there
were 15 clarinet players and nobody wanted to play the =#%$ piccolo since all
the piccolo player's mistakes are intensly public. I also played guitar,
banjo, piano, Eb mellophone and drums. The band director got very upset for
some time until he found out that for a natural doubler (some people are!)
each instrument's skills and understandings adds to the player's musical
knowledge and sensitivity.

HOWEVER in order to go pro, a player really needs to to technique on at least
one of the instruments and really nail it. This requires a great deal of
time and woodshedding . There aren't enough hours in the day to develop the
techniques on all the instruments to do justice to them all, and I finally
concentrated on woodwinds, although I still play the others (and have done
gigs as a doubler where I used them) I used to play professionally, but now
(after many years on the road) I play in community organizations and small
bands, sometimes paid, mostly for charity. I like having a home and time to
do things like fool around with the computer too!

Joie
