According to a ABC announcer introducing Leonard Bernstein's Sonata for
clarinet he was gay. In fact he dedicated the work to David Oppenheimer
who was a young clarinetist in his orchestra with whom he had an affair.
My edition mentions the name. There is also an interesting story about
how the influence for this piece came when he was staying in Key West and
listened to Carribean style music on the radio and this influence was
futher developed for Westside Story.
