I think if you are willing to spend $800, you should look for a used
R-13. This presumes that the student is at least 12 or 13, has played
for at least 1-2 years, and will take good care of the instrument. You
certainly won't lose any money on it if you keep it up.

Assuming you did make this purchase while the student is jr high age,
when the student is in high school it wouldn't be unreasonable to buy
an A clarinet or a decent saxophone depending on desire.
