I don't know anything about the violins. There is a new and interesting book
out called [something like] "Out Of The Wood" that talks about violin wood,
instrument making (no clarinet dicussion, though). I think considered purely
musically, a new high-quality instrument is always the best. I also think
that "attitude" about one's instrument has a profound influence upon the
playing. To some people the loveliness of an old instrument is unavoidable,
and brings out *their* best work.
