I received the following survey a while back, and figured that it would
be best posted to the Klarinet. . .and maybe it already has been. Should
you know of any related materials, please reply to Dr. David McClune at

An annotated survey of Original Clarinet Concertos with Wind or Chamber
Ensemble Written by American Composers between _1987 and 1996_

April 5, 1996

Dear Professor of Band/Clarinet/Composition,

I have been awarded a Pew Charitable Trust-Summer Research Grant to
update my 1990 doctoral treatise from Florida State University: _An
Annotated Survey of Original Clarinet Concertos With Wind or Chamber
Ensemble Written by American Composers Between 1978 and 1987_ (University
Microfilms #AAG9112107). The original treatise uncovered and analyzed 20
new concertos, 14 of which were discovered only because of a similar
survey as this. The Pew Summer Research Grant is funding the costs of
this survey (3800+ mailings), purchasing scores and recordings, and
funding my time to complete the analysis' and writing by early this
Fall. Your quick response is critical for this compact time table.

If you know of _any_ works which would (might) meet the following
criteria, please complete and mail the enclosed postage-paid card {I
supposed e-mail will work since this isn't possible}
1. American composer broadly defined as: (a) US Citizen, or (b) living
in the US, or (c) teaching/composing in the US
2. Clarinet Concerto composed between 1987 and 1996 for Solo Clarinet
(or double concerto) accompanied by primarialy a wind/percussion group of
any size, i.e. Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Chamber
Group, or Winds with a couple strings.

Sincerely,
[signed]

For those who know nothing about this treatise, it is quite a find. The
mention of double concerto, doesn't mean only 2 clarinets BTW (I remember
one piece in the original for clarinet and saxophone).
