I spoke with my son's band director last year; his reply was that there
was little literature available for clarinet in High School jazz
repertoire. Considering the amount of time he spends with the
students (band and jazz band are pretty big stuff all of a sudden
again - the local middle school has > 50% of the entire student body
enrolled in band !!!) he doesn't have the time to work with a an
instrument that he doesn't have a part for. If my son stays in the
current school district for the next year, he'll play keyboards in
the jazz band and possibly double on the clarinet.
