Well, I never! No place for a clarinet in a jazz band? The reason I took
up clarinet in the first place was to play traditional jazz.

Of course, jazz has changed. Clarinet in a modern jazz group is unusual, so
if that is your teacher's background, then she probably has never heard a
jazz clarinettist. I would suggest a little enlightenment. Have her tune
in to "Jazz From the Landing" (probably on your local Public Radio station).
