Hi. I already replied directly to the original author, but I thought I'd
share my experiences with the group. I argued for about 6 years (middle
school -> junior year) to let me play clarinet in jazz band, and finally
gave up. I asked the director what instrument I could play, and he said
that he needed trombones! So, last june I took a trombone home, learned
to read the bass clef, and spent this year playing trombone in the jazz
band. I did get to double on clarinet in one piece, but it was a wierd
ballad (we had the wierdest doubles - our tenor sax player is really a
clarinet player, so he doubled on clarinet in that piece. Our lead alto
figured out how to play flute, and doubled in that same piece, and the
lead trombone is really a flute player, so she doubled on flute as well!)

I think versatility is one of the best skills a musician can have.
Currently, I can play clarinet, sax, trombone, and I am in the middle of
learning flute (I just started two weeks ago. I could probably hold my
own on some easy band music) although clarinet is far and away my
favorite (strangly, I can't stand trombone!). Out of the other doublers
on the list, what do you play, and what is your favorite (for example, my
second favorite is soprano sax, followed by tenor, then bari, then alto
is last.)

Scott
