Hi. My name is Drew Niemeyer. I study clarinet performance at The
University of Queensland in Australia. I'm currently completing my final
(honours) year and must, as part of the course, write an essay on the
results of a small research project.

Basically, I am researching "difficulties" (if any) for writing
for unaccompanied clarinet, so I want to find out what people think
about writing for the clarinet, and why.

Here's an example: Some people prefer to write for flute because it
has such a great range of tonal colours. I don't think I've heard a
clarinettist play with that much diversity. I don't think we can. One
flautist told me he didn't like the clarinet just for this reason.
So, I guess that's a bad point.

But some people still think the clarinet is the most expressive
instrument in the orchestra -- dynamic ranges greater than stringed
instruments, widest range of articulation, etc..
I also need references to books and articles. Boy, do I ask a
lot!

So, tell me what you think. Bye!
