I suggest that you take a look at the following book:

Confronting Stravinsky: man, musician, and modernist.
edited by Jann Pasler
published: Berkeley: University of California Press, 1986.

It is a very extensive study. I haven't used it specifically to check on
the "Firebird," but it deals in great detail with similar problems in
the "Rite of Spring." (That chapter is cleverly called, "Writing the
'Rite' Right.")
