Jack,

recommend such a class?
I am currently engaged with the Salzburger Festspiele in Salzburg,
Austria. I live in Salzburg and Zurich at the moment, and have
participated in several masterclasses throughout Europe. I might suggest
you look into the Mozarteum in Salzburg. You would be able to enroll in
a 2 week masterclass series (don't be put off by the 'masterclass' title
- the general "European" idea focusing on as much playing time possible)
and study with one of either the former princ. clarinetist with the
Berliner Philharmoniker (Mr. Alois Brandhofer) or Alfred Prinz (lg.
article written about him in the last The Clarinet). The masterclasses
are intensive, and you will most likely be able to play daily, or at
least every other day.
The Mozarteum in Salzburg would help organize housing for you during your
stay. Masterclass sessions are very "play" oriented and generally run in
the range (numbers) of 10 to 20 students. The hours are long and
intensive, running through nearly the entie day. When I was engaged as a
student there over the course of several summers, I played daily. :-)
This of course is subject largely to your personal level of preparation.
If you bring something for the professor to work with each day, he will
work with you. :-) The age for these classes is quite varied... from
wunderkind to mid-life and everything in between.
If you have specific questions or would like further information
(telephone/fax/address) for the Mozarteum itself, or a prospect on the
available course this summer, please do not hesitate to e-mail me
personally.
Best of luck in your search...
Gregory
