There has been a lot of correspondence in the past on the "subharmonic" tones
on the a/b/c above the treble clef on the A clarinet. There are clearly quirks
of individual embouchures which make this problem worse, whatver the state of
the hardware. It *can* be (virtually) eliminated with the right embouchure and
reed. I think there was an item from Jonathan Cohler on this topic a while
back.
(I am speaking from my own limited experience, of course - they may well be some
really recalcitrant instruments out there).
