LA CITE UNIVERSITAIRE was created on June 6, 1925, as a campus inside
Paris for foreign and French students in order to provide housing, cultural
exchanges, and mutual understanding.Today it welcomes 5500 students from
124 different nationalities. With an area of more than 100 acres, it is
made up of 37 "houses" where the students live. Each country uses its
own architects, who often use architectural styles from their own
countries. The International House, which is the meeting place for
all of the houses, was built in 1937 thanks to Mr. Rockefeller, Jr.
Its theatre is well known by the Ministry of Culture as a means of
promoting and disseminating information on various cultures. Its library
is made up of more than 40,000 books, and its sports center can
accommodate 35 different sports.
