Gigliotti was hired by the Philadelphia Orchestra, as I have always heard to
assist Ralph McClain, who was still playing principal but was dying of
cancer, in 1949. Herbert Kupferberg in Those Fabulous Philadelphians
(Scribners 1969) shows he became the official principal in 1951. I don't have
his date of birth handy, but I have the impression from somewhere that he was
26 when he was first hired (you can do the math). He is of course still very
much alive and is retiring at the end of this season (I'm not actually sure
whether or not he is touring with them now or playing the Saratoga season in
August).
