The Vandoren A27 (used by Deffayet, former Professor of saxophone of the
Paris conservatory) and the Selmer S80 C* mouthpieces are excellent and
well accepted classical saxophone mouthpieces for alto. The S90 180
Selmer is also well accepted as is the Meyer 5. There is no reason for
a beginner to start on a jazz mouthpiece- it would only add to his
troubles. Why use a student mouthpiece if one can start out with a good
one? The Vandoren S15 is described as a student mouthpiece, but the A27
may actually be better as the shorter facing is easier for a small
mouth.
