Dear Lynn & Robert,
Anthony Gigliotti joined the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1949. He was
appointed to eventually replace Ralph McLane who had been stricken with
cancer. Although Mr. McLane persevered for a time, even heroically
performing the Copland Concerto, his condition subsequently worsened. I
believe that in 1950 Mr. Gigliotti was also offered a position with the
Chicago Symphony. After being informed of this offer, Eugene Ormandy
consulted Mr. McLane's doctors. Once he received a discouraging prognosis,
Ormandy asked Gigliotti to remain with the Philadelphia Orchestra which he
did until now. He will officially end his illustrious career at the end of
this 1996 summer season at Saratoga.
Hope this helps.
