I also had a student a couple of years ago who had such a problem; she
had the nasal equivalent of a cleft palate, and as soon as she practiced
a lot, on would come the rushing air noise. Her doctor had told her there
was nothing she could do physiologically about this, and so we had to
simply limit her practice time to 30 minute "bundles" to keep this under
control (given that she was in high school, this was no problem!).
Interesting to hear the many other encounters with this.
