Being out of print does not make the music out of copyright,
unfortunately, so copying the music & passing it on is technically
in violation of the law. My piano teacher has gone to the publisher,
family, or composer who holds the copyright on music out of print and
has received permission in many cases to copy the music and pass it
on to her students for recitals and such for free, and has received
in some cases a written statement from the copyright holder stating
that a payment to ASCAP or BMI would be required and acceptable for
"public" performances.
YMMV.
