Hi Barbara, Giora Feidmann (sp) is a GREAT klezmer clarinetist. I have
a tape of his.. if I can find it and get it copied, I will send you a
copy. This guy is great!!! He gives concerts all over the place. He is
a very sensitive player, and does all the effects with great phrasing in
mind. I think you would enjoy hearing him. So, it looks like you are
planning a very busy summer for yourself. Could sombody in Houston help
you prepare the audition? IF you donj't want to study with someboyd in
the Symphony, you might call Chester Rowell 713-482-2097-- P.O. Bpx
57731, Webster. TX 77598. I've known Chester since I got to Houston in
1988. He teaches at San Jacinto Community College in Houston, and plays
ALL kinds of jobs on clarinet, as well as Saxophone. He has a good
background on Clarinet, and is a very easy guy to get along with. I
think you would find him very supportive. Tell him you studied with me,
and played with me in the BVSO. He might be able to steer you into some
klezemer playing, but there isnj't much of it going on in the cowboy town
of Houston-----Mozart Clarinet Concerts, 1st mov, is MUST for an
orchestral audition. Get a good recording, Marcellus, Harold Wright, or
what's his name in Berlin Syumphony, and study STYLE and phrasing. For
excerpts, Beethoven 6th, movs 1,2, Beethoven 8th,Trio mov. , --Again get
good recordings, and study the style of each solo. Go for the easier
ones in the Bonade Orchestra study book, or the first two International
Repertory Books...Eble Music in Iowa319-338-0313, or Southern Music in
San Antonio, 1 800-284-5443 should have what you want. Good luck, and
practice LOTS, and LOTs, and LOTS, etc ad nauseum--- I never could
spell---Howe things are going well for you. I've been pretty busy, the
trio is going to do some :"enrichment concerts" in the High Schools in
Brownsville---and a concert in Matamoros at the end of the month. I have
just gotten connected with a Hispanic Pianist, who wants to do some
concerts with me in several cities in Mexico next year. I hope it works
out. Next fall I will be tachiing part-time (can't spell adjunct)
clarinet at U.T. Brownsville, and possible a night class of Music
Appreciation. They will become a 4 year college soon, and have bigger
classes in Fine Arts than their faculty can handle. Also, we will have a
new head Director at Porter High School next year. The guy there now,
just didn't work out. There is a possibility that I could be reassigned,
depending upon who cmoes in. If one candidate gets the job, I will put
in for reassignment myself. Did I tell you? The local Community Band s
planning a trip to Europe in the Summer on 1997? Tbhey will probably
play only 3-4 concerts in three weeks, so there will be lots of time for
other things. I am working with my pianist from U.T.B. to get connected
to do some clarinet recitals while there. Between this and the Mexican
possibilities, I am prqacticing as much as possible to get everything
going real good again. So, how are your 10Gs??For Klezemer, you might
try a softer reed on the Gigliotti mouthpiece, and relax the lipa bit
for a little more schlep in the sound. Take care, let me know how things
are going. If ou have opportunity, come visit us for a couple of days.
Please forgive my typos---Mike Cavin
