Roger,

If you have the kind of trouble that you describe when you pull the
middle joint 1 or 2 mm, then you have problems that should be taken
up with your repair technician. Pulling the tenon a couple of mm
should not cause a problem. Regarding hand position, it is something
that you get use to. IMHO
