Subj: A basic repertoire list
Date: Thu, 9 May 1996 10:53:29 -0400

Randy Oddi's recent (6 May) posting of a "thorough repertoire list" has
caused me to wonder about a "basic repertoire list" (my apologies if this
topic has been discussed earlier; I'm fairly new to the KLARINET discussion
group). I would like to consider (1) concerti, (2) solo pieces, and (3)
sonatas and other works for clarinet and piano.

(1) I don't think that anyone would disagree with my saying that the Mozart
concerto and Weber's concertino and concerti are the greatest works for
clarinet and orchestra. If you were to add one more piece to this list, what
piece would it be?

(2) Stravinsky's Three Pieces for solo clarinet is undoubtedly the best-known
work for solo clarinet. Does anyone have a nominee for the second best-known
solo piece?

(3) Would I get any disagreements if I say that Brahms' clarinet sonatas are
the greatest works for clarinet and piano? Would I be taken to task for
placing Weber's Grand Duo Concertant in third place? What one other piece
would you add to such august company?

I look forward to hearing other's opinions.
