Klarinet Archive - Posting 000196.txt from 1996/05

Barbara Johnstone requests information about learning klezmer-style
clarinet and recordings.
In addition to the previous recommendations I'd like to add:
Gioria Fiedman (sp?) - numerous recordings. I don't particularly like his
style but he is rather popular
Dave Tarras - one of the great klezmer clarinetists that established the
"American Style" in the late 19th/early 20th century. A CD devoted to his
work came out about a year ago that's very well done (and includes a
great excerpt from a 40's broadcast of "The Yiddish Hour" that has an ad
for "The B. Maniscehwitz Company - the world's largest matzo baker")
There's also a growing body of CDs (and LPs) on historical klezmer,
spearheaded by H. Saposnik and others. A good start is the "Klezmer
Pioneers" disc on Rounder (or was it Rhino?).
I can get more exact record/CD info if you're interested.
