Barbara,
The first step is contact that orchestra and ask if they have an
audition list for that audition. Next, check what the rep will be for the
year. Get the Bonade orchestral excerpt book. For the money it's the best
first book of excerpts to have. For a solo piece do either movements I or
III of the Mozart Concerto, Weber 1 or 2 concerto, or Weber Concertino.
You want to play a piece that the conductor and audition committee knows
and these are the most known to non-clarinetists.
For a basic audition list know:

Beethoven 6, I, II, III solos
Brahms 3, I, II solos
Mendelssohn Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream
Rimsky-Korsakov Cappricio Espanol I & III solos

These pieces are on almost every audition (college, amateur, pro).
I won't even start a list for professional auditions - I'd be here all
morning.

Dan
