Baroque flutes & recorders (a la mode de Hotteterre & cie) had *inverted*
conical bores, i.e., the bore was somewhat wider at the blowing end. They
didn't and don't overblow at the twelfth - so, presumably, the shape of the bore
is less important than the initial direction of propagation - or else
whoever-it-was's teacher was talking through his/her ..... [fill in the blank
with some suitable expletive of your choice].
