I suspect I'm cheating here, but I would say something like the Penguin
Guide to Classical music on CD. If they can't get motivated from
listening to great music then I would have to wonder why they want to
play ! (plus the benefits to musicianship, tone etc. of hearing how it's
done).

ps I'm not intending to stir up a hornet's nest on which CD guides are
best/worst etc. I just say the penguin as it's widely available in the
UK (where I am) and regularly updated.
