Good topic. I suppose it depends on how much we want to believe
that the instrament is an extention of the voice. If you believe in
bel canto style, than I don't know why not to use vibrato in some
cases. Or how authentic you want it to be to how practices were in the
composers life time. Recording show that until the late 19th-early 20th
century, violins did not use vibrato on every note like they seem to do
now. They played everything straight and a vibrato was almost a mordent
to be added occasionly for a little flavor.....much like it was used
as early as the baroque period. As far as clarinet goes, there is
a wide range of opinions as we might see here. Personally I think there
are times it sounds ok, and times it is out of place. I'm sure there
will be disagreement against that, but it is just my opnion. :)
