Marketta Kivimaki and Craig Hill inform me that the two keys of the chalumeau
(or, more accurately, their holes) are exactly opposite each other. This is
confirmed by Anthony Baines' 1992 Oxford Companion to Musical Instruments.

Baines also states that the existence of a speaker or register key that
overblows the twelfth is what distinguishes a clarinet from a chalumeau.

Thanks to Nick Shackleton for pointing out the existence of keyless
chalumeaux. It's a pity that none have survived.
