Neil,
What does your friend want to do with the clarinet? Play in an
orchestra, teach, or solo? I admire what Stoltzman has accomplished and
have mixed feelings on his playing (I've heard things I've loved and things
I couldn't stand). It would be interesting to study with him if someone
wasn't set on getting an orchestra job (IMHO).
If your friend want's to play in an orchestra, then study with
someone who's in an orchestra, won the auditions, knows the rep, etc. If
your friend wants to become a soloist or chamber musician, then by all
means study with Richard. Another player who I've been listening to more
and more and really like his playing is Jim Campbell (at IU). Jim's not
quite as high profile as Stoltzman and his interpretations are a little
more subdued compaired to Richards. I've seen Jim teach and he's a super
teacher. Again, I'm not sure if Jim has any orchestra experience. It all
boils down to what do you want to do with the clarinet.

Dan
