When I realized my reed knife needed sharpening I experimented with a variety
of stones I had and didn't find them easy to use or very effective. Since I
only use the tip of the knife, I ended up holding the knife near its handle
in a vise and did the actual shapening of the using a file on the flat side
of the blade, moving the file in the direction of the blade, toward the end
of the blade, rather than perpendicular to it. This worked for me and, since
I only do this every couple of years, I'm not too concerned about the effect
on knife life.
