Dear Richard Lahrson,

You wrote: "Part of the problem is that no original chalumeaux instruments
exist.
I am wondering whether this instrument did exist."

If you don't believe there was an instrument called chalumeau, read first:

New Groves Dictionary of Musical Instruments, "chalumeau".

Then you could continue with:
Colin Lawson: The Chalumeau in the 18th Century Music,
Albert Rice: The Baroque Clarinet

and there are plenty of articles in English about the topic in Early Music and
Galpin Society Journal as well.

In the book by Lawson there are catalogues of compositions included chalumeau by
Vivaldi, Telemann, Graupner, Fasch among others...

There are original chalumeaux at least in Munich and Stockholm museums.

Good luck in finding the wonderful world of the history of the clarinet!

Cordially,
