Oh, I have been stretching my brain cells to come up with a good response to
this, but it just won't surface!

Maybe:

...he gets fired.
...the synth player presses the "clarinet" button.
...his empty chair is quickly removed and the rest of the group enjoys the
extra space.
...no one cares.
...his neighbor trades with his stand, because it doesn't wobble.
...the audience notices and writes letters of protest to the director...
