Having recently joined the Klarinet discussion group, I am responding to
Daniel Paprocki's request for solo lists from other states.
NYSSMA (New York State Schools Music Association) has a list that is
divided into six levels. I have the level 5 and level 6 lists for the
1993-1994 school year (I think). Besides Rabaud's Solo de Concours, other
level 5 (!) pieces include Hindemith's Sonata (any 3 mvts), Osborne's
Rhapsody, Schumann's Fantasy Pieces (all 3), Weber's Concertino, Weber's
Concerto No. 1 (mvt 1 or 3), and Weber's Variations.
The level 6 list, which playing level is necessary (but not sufficient)
for a high school student to be eligible for All-State honors, includes
Brahms' Sonata No. 1 (mvts 1, 2, & 4), Brahms' Sonata No. 2 (mvts 1 & 3),
Copland's Concerto, Debussy's Rhapsode, Hindemith's Concerto, Milhaud's Duo
Concertant, Mozart's Concerto (mvts 1 & 2 or 2 & 3), Poulenc's Sonata (mvts 1
& 2 or 2 & 3), Stravinsky's Three Pieces (all), Weber's Concerto No. 2 (mvts
1 & 2 or 2 & 3), and Weber's Grand Duo Concertant. In 1993 287 high school
students (mostly juniors) auditioned for All-State, and 44 were accepted.
I hope that this information will be of use to clarinettists in other
states.
Sincerely, Dave Yee
