Mannheim Steamroller does the trick for me - a mixture of synths and
real instruments. I accidentally got to see an open rehearsal in
Ann Arbor, Michiganat Hill Auditorium (the state Solo & Ensemble Festival was
in Ypsilanti & the clarinetist in the family had a solo at 9:00 AM and
a quartet at 4:00 - Ann Arbor & the U of M campus were a great place to
kill time !!!) and watched Chip Davis blend the sounds of an amplified
violin, an incredible amout of electronic synth gear and, oh, maybe 60 or
so musicians into a great sounding ensemble. Chip seems to have blended
(to me) the best of both sounds, artificial and live, without making
everything sound the same (there's another composer/musician, who I won't
mention, who makes the synth & real instrument sound basically the same
for every piece - formula music to my ears). Yup, there were clarinets
and other woodwinds in that orchestra, along with brass & strings, not
just your average massed string ensemble that many "modern" and rock
orchestras utilize.

The kids & I just loved it (and it was free to boot !!)
