David,
I'm using the Stubbins "Recital Lit for the clarinet" book 1 for my
reference - so I'm not sure if our lines per page match up. So on my 1st
page I see two sections - the cadenza till the high D half note and the
small interlude to the Largo. I still stand on my statement (my opinion of
course!) that the cadenza is too long for a high school student (my earlier
posting questions why is this piece on contest lists) to keep musically
interesting.
The Largo is a challenge a student to keep rhythmically accurate
and not rush in a performance. From my experience, the darker the page,
the more apt a student is to rush the tempo.
My point on the last two lines wasn't the high G but its position
at the end of 3 lines of almost non-stop (1 eigthth rest) technical music
and ending on the high G - with a good tone and in tune! I'm sure most
high school students can produce a good high G but can they do it in this
context - at the end of a 4 page piece and most probally in need of a
breath by the time of the high G.
I feel that any high school student planning on majoring in music
(ed or performance) should be capable of playing the Weber Concertino.
You're right the "musical value" is a judgement call and I will aggree that
the Concertino is more "musically" challenging. I don't feel that the
Weber is more technically challenging. IMHO, Concertino is built on many
basic scale patterns (if the student is doing their Baermann) and the
Rabaud has more broken scale patterns.
The Weber Concertino is one of the all time great pieces for
clarinet - definitely in the top ten. The Rabaud is an exam piece. Yes,
it's a nice little piece, but to even compare it to a work by C.M. von
Weber? I don't think so.

P.S.
David,
Aren't you the list rep for the ICA? What about my posts on the
amateur clarinetist and the undiscovered country? Is my ICA membership
being revoked this minute? Do I have to switch to the saxophone? Let's
hear something from the ICA.

Dan
