I always have a dampit in the case. I also try to keep some of
the school instraments from drying out. Seems like every time we have
to pull the C, A flat or alto out of moth balls, the wood is extremly
dried out and the rings fall off and they are in danger of cracking till
we get some moisture in there. As far as cold goes, I just make sure
that the clarinet isn't ever exposed to excessive cold or hot temps.
That and I make sure I don't use it as a club or anything has kept
my clarinet from cracking. Swabing it out also keeps groves from forming
inside and weakening the wood. Cracks is reason number 94 I don't let
our trumpet prof use clarinets to stake tomatoes, which he says is the
only thing they are good for......geesh! Brass players, can't live
with them, can't send them to Tanzania. =-)
